Togean Marine Park, located on the Togean Islands, is a leading tourist attraction in Central Sulawesi. In addition for having the largest coral reef in Indonesia (132,000 hectares), Togean Marine Park is also famous for miraculous diving point that amounted to hundreds. The three largest islands are Batudaka, Togian, and Talatakoh. There are 37 villages on the islands.
The word Togean comes from the local language means “Togo ian” – three brothers whose originally came to the island from South Sulawesi. One of them stayed on Una-Una, the second on Batudaka and third on Togian.
Stunning reefs, small isolated white sandy beaches, traditional fishermen village of a Bajau, verdant rainforest have left many a world weary travel searching for superlatives. Many tourists, scientists, researchers and NGOs interested in visiting this island.
In 2004, the government has set Togean Islands as a National Park with an area of 292,000 hectares of sea, land area of 70,000 hectares and 10,659 hectares of protected forest and mangrove conservation.
Togean Islands itself is a group of several islands in the Gulf of Tomini defined as Togean Islands Marine Park, which is also an important part of the world’s coral reef triangle (Sulawesi, Filipinos and Papua New Guinea).
To increase the number of tourist visits, the local government held Festival Togean. The festival attracts foreign tourists to see the natural beauty of this unspoiled land.
